Beyond the Science of Reading: Elevating Literacy through the Science of Learning

Participants will explore the basics of how the brain learns and how that applies to the Science of Reading, why decoding must be taught systematically at any age, and how all educators play a critical role in developing students’ language comprehension. The session emphasizes that all students can engage with and understand complex, grade-level written and spoken language—regardless of their decoding skill level. In this session, participants will examine the characteristics of advanced learners, common misconceptions, and the importance of equitable access to appropriately rigorous instruction. Through readings, videos, and collaborative discussion boards, educators will engage in meaningful reflection and dialogue, best practices for differentiation, enrichment, and acceleration in diverse classroom settings. Emphasis is placed on translating theory into practice and equipping educators with actionable strategies that can be immediately implemented to better meet the needs of advanced learners while maintaining inclusive classroom environments.
Collaborative/Co-Teaching – Making It Work! Fostering a Culture that includes all Students in ALL Classrooms or CTE Settings.

This workshop will focus on delivering service to ALL students in an inclusive setting and create an understanding of best practices for leading and teaching in a co-taught environment. While reviewing the key elements to a successful co-teaching model, participants will review the six approaches to co-teaching, common language, and the strategies for co-teaching instruction. This provides an understanding of the cooperative process while learning to distribute leadership responsibility in a classroom and develop an understanding of how to utilize co-teaching to support and NOT replace MTSS and the DCAP. This workshop will emphasize the need for all adults in the school to create a mindset that everyone is responsible for the social, emotional, and academic achievement of ALL students.
A Realistic Look at Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plans, Reducing Bullying and Social Conflicts in Schools.
Presenter: Thomas L. Brow, Jr, Seaside Consultant
Audience: School Administrators, Principals, Assistant Principals, Department Heads, Teacher Leaders, and Teachers who Aspire to be Administrators.
This workshop will explore behaviors that constitute bullying and behaviors that are not considered bullying. We will examine the law and the required components of the mandated Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan (BPIP) and what steps DESE's Problem Resolution Staff will initiate if they receive a "letter of concern" about an alleged bullying case. Several case studies will be examined along with the latest research. Educators will share how to reduce the incidences of bullying and what to do when bullying and/or social conflicts occur. The tenants of a social-behavior diversionary program will be discussed and how to immediately set up a diversionary program in your school.
